Sex in the City

I love movies in general of all genres, creeds, types, profiles and walks of life.  There are not that many movies that I can stand up and shout how or why was this made.  It was with this background that I turned in my Comcast pay per view option and not finding anything exciting finally decided to watch the famed “Sec in the City” movie that was so highly touted a few months ago.  I remember listening to all the hype of women dressing up, going out to dinner, making an event of seeing the movie.  How there was crying and sadness at the potential break-up of Mr. Big and Carrie and the wedding of everyone’s dreams that should have been but never came to final fruition.
Admittedly my expectations were not high but for a light hearted evening it seemed like the perfect glass of wine relax in the chair and enjoy some frivolous background entertainment.  It was a weekday so the opportunity costs of missing any offsetting options were rather light.  Again, to emphasize I am male but I do like an entertaining romantic comedy as much as anyone of any sex dating back to the famed “When Harry met Sally”.  I am a big Meg Ryan fan before she lost herself by branching out beyond her socially accepted roles and never seemed to find her way back.
The movie starts out letting everyone who didn’t watch the show catch up on the current situation of the four main characters letting you find out that Samantha Jones is now living in LA with her boyfriend of five years who has to be about 15 years her junior.  Interestingly enough Samantha seems to be in almost everyone scene somehow magically being transported back to New York for all the major events.  This alone is odd as she keeps popping up and is a perfect example of the pointless plot, rambling dialogue and the nonexistent storyline.  Everything is so trivial in this movie pointing out the obvious goal.  The only reason it could have possible been made was for the fat paychecks the four main characters were given to participate.
Sarah Jessica Parker is great and always has been.  As the main character in the TV series you watched her and the posse grow and blossom while retaining their own identity keeping themselves from getting lost while living in New York.  That is no easy task for anyone but my assumption is it would be especially difficult in New York.  The title holds true to the theme as the story does focus on relationships but in the movie you lose that edge and it comes across as being forced with no clear direction.  The obvious marriage and major dilemma of the movie being the wedding disaster caused by Mr. Big’s inability to commit could be seen in the opening credits and once you know the story of a movie 3 minutes in it is hard to concentrate.
The only positive in the endeavor could offer was the acting of David Eigenberg who plays Miranda’s husband and as a subplot has an affair due to Miranda’s lack of sexual attention over the past 6 months.  The scene where you get to see her pubic hair branching out from her swimsuit in Mexico was another of the many unneeded examples of how the show lacked any ability to subtly guide you into a thought or feeling.  It jumped from shoving your face into a situation full force to giving you needless footage of Samantha lying naked on the kitchen bar wearing nothing but Sushi covering her nipples and crotch waiting for her boyfriend to come home.
In general the movie was a sad depiction of the times we live in where making a dollar far outweighs the need to producing anything artistic and worth watching.  I would ask all four to please give us a break and move on.  Sarah you are too talented to get sucked into doing a sequel.  How many more commitment issues can Mr. Big possible have?  Let the characters go and find another outlet for your immense ability that we can all enjoy.  My only saving grace was being able to condense the 2 and a half plus hour movie into about an hour plus thanks to the technological breakthrough of fast forward.  I could never have made it through the entire thing without this advantage.
